Most photos are done with an iPhone or iPad ...(like I do), so this should be easy.
DON'T take the photo looking down on the meal.
Take it at a slight a slight angle and get in close so you can get a good focus point. (touch the screen to focus the camera)
No meal, no matter how delicious, looks good taken from above. It just looks like someone sicked up. That's why most soups, stews etc look horrid when posted on Facebook / Instagram. But this technique should save it. (also garnish works well)

Remember: take it an angle and get in close for that "OMG That's looks insanely tasty' shot.
Also up the contrast as that brings out the colours and depth of textures of the dish. (there's nothing wrong with a touch of food styling)
